What is it ?

Shisha, also known as hookah, nargile, or waterpipe, is a smoking device used to smoke flavored tobacco, also known as mu'assel. Shisha consists of a bowl, stem, water base, and hose. The tobacco is heated by coals placed on top of the bowl, and the smoke is filtered through water before being inhaled through the hose.

Shisha has a long and rich history. Its origins trace back to India in the 16th century, where it was first created using coconut shells as the base. It spread to Persia (modern-day Iran), where it gained popularity, and later to Turkey and the Arab world. Over centuries, the design and use of shisha evolved, and today, it is enjoyed worldwide in social settings, particularly in Middle Eastern and North African cultures.

How does it look ?

  • Bowl: This is where the flavored tobacco is placed. A piece of foil or a heat management device is used to separate the coal from the tobacco.

  • Stem: The metal tube that connects the bowl to the water base. The smoke passes through this stem before being filtered in the water.

  • Water Base: This is the bottom container filled with water. The water cools and purifies the smoke.

  • Hose: A flexible pipe through which the smoke is inhaled. Most modern shishas come with multiple hoses for sharing.
